Street improvement public hearing, tobacco ordinance on council agenda

The Austin City Council is holding a public hearing on street improvements for 2019 during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

Proposed street improvements for this year are:

• Project 19105 – Oakland Place Southeast (10th Street to 11th Street Southeast);

• Project 18101 – 14th Street Southeast (Fourth Avenue to north of First Avenue Southeast);

• Project 19102 – Ninth Street Southwest (First Avenue to Sixth Avenue Southwest), 10th Street Southwest (First Avenue to Sixth Avenue Southwest) and 11th Street Southwest (First Avenue to Second Avenue Southwest);

• Project 19103 – Sixth Street Northwest (Eighth Avenue to 13th Avenue Northwest) and 11th Avenue Northwest (Fourth Street to Eighth Street Northwest); and

• Project 19106 – Sixth Street Northeast (30th Avenue to 36th Avenue Northeast).

The council will also vote on resolutions authorizing the application for a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant for the construction of pickleball courts and a poured in place playground. The grant money would be used in addition to Hormel Foundation grants awarded to the city for the same purpose.

The council will be discussing a possible tobacco ordinance during its work session following the meeting.

During the open discussion segment of the previous work session, Councilman Steve King, who is a member of the Austin Area Drug Taskforce, mentioned that the Taskforce would like to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products in the city to 21. The Drug Taskforce will be addressing the council during Tuesday’s work session.

The council will also discuss a stop sign request at Eighth Avenue and Sixth Street Southwest and a request to annex the 109-acre Kehret property.

In observance of Presidents Day, the council will hold its next regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Council Chambers located in the basement of City Hall. The work session will be held immediately following the meeting in the conference room located across the hall.
