Pack struggles against JM

The No. 4  ranked Austin boys basketball couldn’t match Rochester John Marshall’s inside game as the Packers lost 70-57 in Packer Gym Tuesday.

The Packers stormed back from a 13-point first half deficit to take a 50-45 lead in the second half after Ngor Deng hit a pair of free throws. Unfortunately for Austin, Medi Obang, who had 20 points, picked up his fourth foul with 8:53 left in the game. The Rockets took advantage of Obang going to the bench and put together 10-0 spurt to go up 55-50 late in the game and Austin couldn’t recover.

“Our kids played their tails off and they played extremely hard,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “We had a 50-45 lead and I thought things we’re looking good. Medi picked up his fourth foul, we put him on the bench and that really hurt. That stretch was a killer.”

Matthew Hurt poured in 31 points for the Rockets (10-6 overall, 8-4 Big Nine) and he also made plays for Lincoln Meister also did damage inside for JM, which out-rebounded the Packers 30-16.

“I just thought they played better than we did,” Fadness said. “The better team won tonight. It’s on all of us. We had a hard time keeping Matthew from catching the ball tonight and he did a nice job distributing. Meister had some nice inside looks. We just couldn’t stop that high-low game and that was our downfall.”

Austin (12-4 overall, 11-2 Big Nine) has now lost two straight, something it hasn’t done in the regular season since the Feb. 6 of 2016.
