Landowners can place orders for a large variety of trees – bareroot and container grown – through March as part of Mower Soil & Water Conservation District’s annual program aimed at conservation.

Only limited quantities, however, will be available after Feb. 28; order cancellations will not be accepted after that date.

“We strongly encourage anyone interested in ordering trees to get it done this month before the early deadline,” said James Fett, Mower SWCD’s watershed technician who leads the tree program. “Orders are on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

This year, the program’s extensive list of bareroot trees has five more species: Red Pine, Bitternut Hickory, Norway Siouxland Poplar, Nannyberry and Prairie Red Plum.

Orders must be placed and fully paid by April 1, with Mower SWCD, which will distribute trees in mid-April on the west side of the Runnings store in northwest Austin. Letters with pickup dates and times will be sent in early April to everyone who placed orders.

Landowners who have questions or need help with planning a windbreak are encouraged to contact Mower SWCD technician Larry Callahan for assistance.

Tree order forms — which include tree types, sizes and prices – are available at Mower SWCD, 1408 21st Ave. N.W., and online at mowerswcd.org/tree_seed_sales/.

Bareroot trees are sold in bundles of 25 and offered in three types of species: evergreens, deciduous and shrubs. Evergreens also are offered in container-grown options, including one- and two-gallon pots for Techny Arborvitae, Black Hills Spruce and Meyer Spruce (two gallon only).

Mower SWCD also sells tree mats with staples and tree shelters with stakes.
