Floyd E. Bednar, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin.

Floyd Earl was born May 8, 1931, in Austin to Benjamin and Lottie (Kos) Bednar. In his youth, Floyd enjoyed playing the trumpet and was very active in basketball and golf. Floyd graduated from Austin High School with the Class of 1949. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from Feb. 8, 1952, until his honorable discharge on Feb. 7, 1954. Floyd returned home and began working at the Austin Country Club, which marked the beginning of a long career in the bar/liquor industry in the Austin area. Floyd was united in marriage to Nancy Lee Opsahl on June 18, 1966, in Austin. They later divorced. He was one of the original founders and co-owner of the B&J Bar in Austin. His passion for golf continued throughout his life, as did his love of classical music. All of his adult life he loved watching sports, especially the Minnesota Gophers. Floyd was a longtime member of the Austin American Legion Post 91.

He is survived by his daughter, Sara (Greg) Lensing of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Eric, Alex and Keli; sister-in-law, Arlene Bednar of Austin; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Helen (Andrew) Neus, Mildred (Robert) Bellrichard, Donald (Betty) Bednar and Benjamin Bednar; and nephews, Tom Bellrichard and Gene Bednar.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday Jan. 5, 2019, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Military rites will be by Olaf B. Damm VFW Post 1216 and Austin American Legion 91. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. prior to services on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery following the funeral service. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
