Students, driver taken to hospital after bus accident; Bus went off road into field

Three Austin students were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin after their school bus slid off the road and into a field Friday morning.

According to Mower County Chief Deputy Mark May, Mower County deputies were alerted of a school bus accident at 6:56 a.m. on Friday at Highway 105 and County Road 4 in Austin Township. The Minnesota State Patrol accident report states the bus was approaching County Road 4 on Highway 105 when it drove through the stop sign and T-intersection and into a plowed field.

The Lyle Police Department, Austin Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

An email from Austin Public Schools said seven students were on the bus when the accident occurred. Three students were transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin for precautionary reasons while the rest were released to their parents, according to the email.

The bus driver, Keith Mitchell Alm, 75, of Austin and the bus paraprofessional, Joseph Todd Morse, 35, of Elkton were also transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin.

All injuries were deemed non-life threatening.

The Minnesota State Patrol accident report indicated wet road conditions were the cause of the accident.
