Bryan Carl Toney, 78

Bryan Carl Toney, 78, of Kellogg, Minnesota, formerly of Duluth, Minnesota, and Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Wabasha, Minnesota.

He was born to Nancy Marie and Carl Toney on Dec. 22, 1939, in Perry, Iowa. Most of his childhood was spent in Brooklyn, Iowa, where he graduated from high school. He was proud to become an Eagle Scout and earning the God and Country Award. He graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, with a degree in chemistry. While at Simpson, he met Rosella Jeanne Schow. They were married Aug. 28, 1960, near Malvern, Iowa. He later went on to earn his masters degree in zoology at North Carolina State University.  He taught in high schools in Iowa for three years and was later a professor of biology for 20 years at Austin Community College. He finished his teaching career at Duluth Community College in 1996. His passions were gardening, photography and sharing his pictures, fishing, traveling and storytelling. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, either when they came to visit or while vacationing together. He volunteered at the Hormel Nature Center in Austin, Hartley Nature Center and Lake Superior Aquarium in Duluth, and The ARK in Port Aransas, Texas.  Following retirement, Bryan and Rosie spent the winter months in Texas. Bryan loved to travel. Some of their highlights included a trip to the Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Hawaii, and many elder hostels.

Bryan is survived by his wife, Rosie; four children, Sue (Earl) Pike, Isanti, Minnesota, Cheryl Toney (Russ Morgan) Wabasha, Karen (Ted) Hilgendorf, Isanti, and Scott (Natalie Orobello) Toney, Punta Gorda, Florida; 10 grandchildren, Anna (Marni) Smith, Jonathan (Judy) Pike, Christian Pike, Emily (Kevin) Fratzke, Jason Morgan, Nicole (Jordan) Ford, Matt Hilgendorf, Becca Hilgendorf, Nathan Toney and Rachel Toney; younger brother, Robert (Marlene) Toney, Johnston, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Richard Schow, Tabor, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Nancy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at the United Church of Christ in Wabasha with the Rev. James Clausen officiating. Family and friends may call one hour before the service on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Greenfield Cemetery in rural Kellogg. Memorials are preferred to the Hormel Nature Center in Austin, Hartley Nature Center and Lake Superior Aquarium in Duluth, or the ARK in Port Aransas. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.
