Helen Alice Powell, 100

Helen Alice Powell, 100, of Austin, Minnesota, died at the Cedars of Austin on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018.
Helen was born in March 1918 in Hayward, Minnesota, to Knute and Mamie (Gulbrandson) Fjelbroten. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1936. On June 19, 1938, Helen married Lyal Powell in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Helen enjoyed being a homemaker and created a peaceful home atmosphere for her family.
She was a faithful member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA. After moving to her home at the Cedars, she became a member of the Red Hat Ladies. Helen had a lot of interests that kept her young.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lyal, in 1994; brothers, Walter and Melvin; and sisters, Thea and Bernice.
Helen is survived by her children, Steven (Marilyn) Powell, Rochester, New York, and Kathy (Al) Chepelnik, Duluth, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jeff (Mary) Powell, Cincinnati, Ohio, Tim (Jen) Powell, Buffalo, New York, Jenna (Chris) Kinter, Leesburg, Virginia, Jim Chepelnik, Duluth, and Maria Chepelnik, St. Paul, Minnesota; eight great-grandchildren, Grace, Josiah, Julia, Micah, Emily, Benjamin, Abigail and Kayleigh; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Madison Chelberg officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Monday at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
