Street assessments, Austin Area Commission for the Arts update on council agenda

The Austin City Council will be holding a public hearing on street improvement assessments during its regular meeting on Monday.

Under a resolution to be put before the council, the portion of the cost to be assessed against the property owners benefiting from the repairs is $2,993.46. The assessments can be payable in equal annual installments over a 15-year period with an interest rate of 4.75 percent per year. The first installment is due on or before the first Monday in January 2019.

Properties responsible for the assessment are Fifth Street Southeast (from 13th Avenue Southeast to the dead end), Eighth Drive Southeast (from 15th Avenue Southeast to 16th Avenue Southeast) and 15th Avenue Southeast (from Sixth Street to Eighth Drive Southeast).

The council will also swear-in George Bass, director of business services for Riverland Community College, as its first honorary council member on Monday.

Councilwoman Laura Helle will update the council on the Austin Area Commission of the Arts’ 2018 numbers during the work session following the regular meeting.

In 2018, the Austin ArtWorks Center saw an 80 percent increase in adults served and an eight percent increase in the number of classes offered from 2017. The Austin ArtWorks Festival had a record setting year of 67 exhibitors in 2018,saw an increase of 1,500 visitors from 2017 and featured 24 musical acts, a 40 percent increase from 2017.

Public Works Director Steven Lang will also give updates on the Dobbins Creek Grant and the 14th Street Northwest Bridge update.
