Second-half surge not enough: Mayo ends Packers’ season

ROCHESTER -— The Austin football team had it’s season end in the same place it started as the No. 5 seeded Packers were knocked off by No. 4 Rochester Mayo 58-32 in a Section 1AAAAA Tournament opener Tuesday.

After trailing 37-0 at the break, the Packers (2-7 overall) made a big surge in the second half. Hunter Guyette had a pair of TD runs and Gavin Owens ran a kick-off back 89 yards to bring Austin within 44-26 going into the fourth quarter.

“We kind of had the same talk at the beginning of the game as we had at halftime,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “The kids responded better at halftime and I don’t why. It was nice that the kids responded. (The seniors are) a great group of guys and they’ve worked really hard. They’re a great bunch of guys to coach and I’m going to miss those guys a ton.”

The Spartans (6-3 overall) took over the game early in the second quarter when they scored two TDs in a span of 10 seconds to go up 28-0. Israel Lozoya had three rushing TDs in the first half for Mayo and he was a handful to get to throughout the night.

“Lozoya for them is phenomenal and we knew that and told the kids,” Vesel said. “(Jason) Williamson (of Owatonna) is really good and (Lozoya)is right there with him. He is special. We just didn’t have an answer for him and he was so elusive and so fast.

The Packers had lost to Rochester Mayo in the season opener on Aug. 31.
