Roger William Towles, 72, a native son of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sept. 29, 2018, at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, California.

Born March 22, 1946, to Quentin Towles and Mary Grimes Towles in Austin, Roger grew up with three older sisters and attended Pacelli High School. Shortly after graduating in 1964, Roger moved to California.

He started a career in lithography, where he was a long-time employee of Westgate Press and Madison St. Press in Oakland, California, and retired in 2008. Roger married Margaret “Peggy” LaDue in March 1976 and they had a son, Christopher. Together, they raised Christopher and Jeffrey Lucas (stepson) for over 12 years, after which Roger became widowed.

He was a devoted and hard-working single father, coach, and mentor to Christopher and Jeffrey. Roger and his birth child, John Glover (separated by adoption), established a loving relationship in John’s adulthood. Roger is remembered as a selfless family patriarch, tech enthusiast, outdoorsman, and loving grandfather.

Roger joins his wife, Peggy (1987); and son, Jeffrey (2017); in heaven.

Roger is survived by his sons, Christopher Towles (Nicole), Albany, California, and John Glover (Carissa), Pleasanton, California; sisters, Patricia Sanderson, Appleton, Wisconsin, Barbara Citrano, Berkeley, California, and Marsha Harbin, Racine, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Pat LaDue, Mendocino, California, and Kathy LaDue (Discovery Bay, CA); Nieces Leanne LaDue (Mendocino, CA), Loni Bethea, Bear Dam, Wisconsin, Leann Greenquist, Racine, Denice Legois, Burlington, Wisconsin, Kelli Rayburn (Bruce), El Sobrante, California, and Sara Marquez, El Sobrante; nephews, Michael Bugge, Richmond, California, Edwin Harbin, Racine, Jason Sanderson, Appleton, and Damon Sanderson, Appleton; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at the Cathedral of Christ the Light Mausoleum in Oakland. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org/donate, “Give in Memory”).
