The Austin boys soccer team needed a little late magic to lock up its second straight Big Nine title as senior Kevin Ortiz scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Packers a 1-0 win over Rochester Century (8-7 overall, 6-4 Big Nine) on the road Thursday.

The Packers took the ball from midfield and Ortiz was able to break through for the score.

“He was calm, he did a cut to beat the keeper and he put it right in the net,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said.

Austin struggled on offense for much of the night as rainy conditions slowed them down.

“It was rainy and we had a number of opportunities inside the box, where guys just slipped,” Levisen said “The guys maintained their focus and Dylan Hannegraf stepped up before overtime and helped the guys focus. They had lots of belief in each other and it was nice to see Dylan step up in that way.”

The Packers will share the Big Nine title with Rochester Mayo.

“We play in a very competitive conference and it’s huge [to win two in a row],” Levisen said. “Mayo is a very strong team. We’ve made some adjustments and been able to persevere.”

Austin (13-2 overall, 10-1 Big Nine) will have plenty of time to rest up for Section 1A tournament play as it likely will not have to play until Oct. 13.
