Mower 4-H’ers present their best in MN 4-H State Dog Show

Seven 4-H youth from Mower County participated in the Minnesota 4-H State Dog show Sept. 22-23..
In total, 360 youth and 427 dogs from across the state participated in the annual event at the Minnesota State Fair.
Over the two-day event, 4-H’ers demonstrated their skills and knowledge in agility, obedience, showmanship, and rally, competing against other youth in their age group and experience level.
Youth members of the Minnesota 4-H Dog Project learn to train and build a trusting relationship with their pet. Topics of study include canine behavior, breed characteristics, diseases, ethics, grooming, health, nutrition, responsible breeding, service dogs, therapy dogs, dog-related careers and the wide array of dog sports.
“Youth learn so much responsibility from training their dog and competing in the 4-H State Dog Show,” said Kim Lambert, one of the 749 adults who volunteer with the 4-H Dog Project statewide. “These kids work all year long, building strong partnerships with their dogs. If they don’t work carefully with their dogs, the dogs won’t work for them. The responsibility kids learn here they can use forever.”
The following youth were members of the Mower County delegation:
• Catrina Andree: Agility-Beginner-16 inches-Gr. 9-13-Reserve Champion, Agility-Elementary-16 inches-Gr. 9-13-White, Agility-Jumpers 1-16 and 20 inches-Gr. 11-13-Red, Agility-Jumpers 2-16 inches-Gr. 9-13-White.
• Elizabeth Benson: Agility-Senior-4, 8 and 12 inches–all grades-Reserve Champion, Agility-Jumpers 3-4, 8 and 12 inches-all grades-First Award of Excellence.
• Gabriana Benson: Rally-Foundation-Gr.4-Reserve Champion, Obedience-Foundation-Gr. 4-First Award of Excellence.
• Isabelle Benson: Agility Beginner and Agility Jumpers 1-4, 8, and 12 inches- Gr. 9-13-Blues.
• Gabrielle Bhend: Obedience-Foundation-Gr. 5-6-Blue, Showmanship-Novice-Gr. 5-6-Blue, Rally-Foundation-Gr 5-6-Blue.
• Seanna Kubas: Agility –Elementary-4, 8 and 12 inches-Gr. 3-8-Reserve Champion, Agility-Jumpers 2-4, 8, and 12 inches-Gr 3-8-Blue.
• Lauren Nielsen: Agility-Elementary-16 and 20 inches- Gr. 3-8-Blue, Agility-Jumpers 2-16 and 20 inches-Gr. 3-8-White.
