Elmer Royce Olund, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 17, 1933, in rural Todd County, Minnesota, to Elmer M. and Florence Mae (Maher) Olund. Following high school, Elmer attended vocational school and worked for the U.S. Postal Service. On Sept. 13, 1952, he married Marilyn Malchow in Austin. Together the couple raised five children. The Olunds lived on Mabel Lake near Remer, Minnesota, for 24 years before returning to Austin. Elmer served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1954. He retired from his job with the postal service in 1986. Elmer loved living up north at the family’s lake home. He was a hunter and a fisherman and passed on his love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Elmer also enjoyed woodworking, creating many treasures for his children and grandchildren. His memory will live on through his loving family, who will miss him dearly.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Austin; his children, Bradley Olund (Susan Grothe) of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Susan Olund of Austin, Brian (Ann) Olund of Bloomington, Minnesota, Gregory (Pamela) Olund of Chanhassen, Minnesota, and Matthew Olund of Howard Lake, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Justin (Chelsie), Eric (Amanda), Hannah, Benjamin, Trevin and Brooke; siblings, Dennis (Ann) Olund of Austin, Geraldine (Roger) Tildsley of Turlock, California, and Charlotte (Denny) Kubicek of Austin; brother-in-law, Wallace (Helen) Malchow of Austin; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Florence; his brother, Dale Olund; sister, Donna Huinker; his stepfather, Larry Farrell; and half-brothers, Ron, Ted, Russell and Jack; and infant twin brothers, John and William Farrell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Gemechu Olana officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. There will be a visitation for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
