Barbara Louise (Hrubetz) Nelson, 83, of Lyle, Minnesota, passed away at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, in her home.

Barbara Louise Nelson, 83

Barbara was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Austin, Minnesota, to Lorraine (Pavek) Hrubetz and Louis Hrubetz. She graduated from Austin High school in 1953. She married Chet Nelson on Nov. 28, 1953, and bore four awesome children, according to her. They resided in Austin until 1985. They moved to the Nelson family farm in Lyle, where they currently resided.

One of Barb’s proudest achievements was graduating from nursing school in the early 80s and she always took excellent care of her family with her nursing skills. She also used her nursing skills on Eric when, at five years old, he fell into a motel swimming pool. She administered CPR and saved his life. Barb’s greatest love was spending time with her family. She loved to shop and would take her daughters and granddaughters on overnight hotel/shopping sprees during hunting season. She enjoyed her time at Leech Lake with her family and grandchildren, where many games of 500 were played and she cheated vigorously and won!! She was an avid fisherwoman back in the day and usually out fished her husband, Chet.

In her last years, she and Chet loved attending church at Calvary Lutheran Church, where they were members, with Pastor Unseth, whom Barb adored and he cherished her. She also loved watching westerns on GRIT, doing family Bible studies and cooking wonderful meals for her family, which will be greatly missed. We will never taste an apple pie, potato salad, baked beans or chocolate cake like the ones that she prepared.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Chet; son, Greg (Sheila) Nelson, Las Vegas, Nevada; grandson, Dustin (Amanda) Nelson; great-grandson, Gannon; daughter, Julene (Craig) Selander, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; granddaughter, Brittany; grandson, Brock, who passed to heaven in 2014; daughter, Kristal (Steve) Gillen, Mound, Minnesota; granddaughter, Brooke; great-grandchildren, Brayden and Willow; grandson, Nick; son, Jeff (Diane) Nelson, Queen Creek, Arizona; granddaughter, Jaden; and sister, Karen (Doc) Skjeveland, Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

We will miss you mom, every second of every day. Mom, you were the best.

A celebration of Barb’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at Six Mile Grove Church, 58251 105th St., Lyle, MN, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018 at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.
