Raymond M. Guttormson, 96

Raymond Morse Guttormson was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Austin Township, Minnesota, to Roy and Mabel (Basness) Guttormson. He grew up and attended school in Austin. Raymond proudly served his country with the U.S. Army as an MP sergeant in World War II from 1940-1945. Upon returning home, he attended Austin Junior College, received his diploma, and continued his education further through correspondence courses to earn his degree as a professional engineer. On Nov. 1, 1944, Raymond was united in marriage to the love of his life, Frances Byers. The couple made their home in Austin and were blessed with six children. Raymond worked for Mower County for over 46 years as a surveyor, draftsman and then the county highway engineer until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 91 in Austin. Raymond enjoyed time with family at the cabin and many camping trips throughout the years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. In later years, he loved RV travel with Frances. They spent many winters in Weslaco, Texas. His family meant the world to him. He treasured time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He taught us love, respect, gratitude and honesty. Ray will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, including his loyal dog, Heidi.

Survivors include his children, Carolyn (Gerald) Sash of Austin, Marsha (Steve) Bergan of East Gull Lake, Minnesota, Kevin (Kathleen) Guttormson of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Marlin (Kristi) Guttormson of Wyoming, Minnesota, Thomas (Melissa) Guttormson of Montgomery, Minnesota, and Jill (Dave) Brosen of Owatonna; nine grandchildren, Lon, Scott, Jeff, Courtney, Drew, Katie, Zach, Aaron and Grace; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Noah, Madelyn, Drake, Will and Finn; brothers, James (Janet) of Austin and Arnold (Lucille) Guttormson of Crosslake, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
