Ida Hamblen Dolan, age 99, and longtime resident of Austin, Minnesota and most recently living in Owatonna, Minnesota, died on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Birchwood Cottages in Owatonna.

Ida was born July 16, 1918 on the family farm near Gorham, Maine to Joseph Sr. and Nellie Elkins Hamblen. After graduating from Gorham High School in 1937 she attended Gorham Normal School, graduating in 1940. She taught school for almost five years during the World War II years.

In 1942 she met Army PFC Joseph Dolan who was stationed in Maine. They were married Dec. 18, 1943, at the family Hamblen farm. After the war they moved to Austin where Joe’s family resided.

They were blessed with six daughters and two sons. Ida was a devoted wife and mother. She worked hard, caring for her children and met the challenge of raising her three youngest children alone after Joe died July 13, 1976. She was a longtime member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Being an avid cook and baker, she enjoyed her work in the kitchen at both Queen of Angels School and Gerard School.

Ida served many hours volunteering at the hospital, Queen’s School library and for Meals on Wheels. She was always willing to help anyone in need. She was very grateful for the opportunities that she had to travel and especially enjoyed her yearly visits to Maine.

Ida is survived by her children Marjorie and Leonard Gallus, Arden Hills, Minnesota, Ida Mary and Harvey Miller, Owatonna, Cynthia Dolan Alley, Eagan, Minnesota, Lillian Dolan Ziff and Stephen Ziff, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Joseph and Linda Dolan, Austin, Mary Dolan Jensen and Terry Jensen, Hopkins, Minnesota, David and Cathy Dolan, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Melissa Dolan and Jim Long, Roseville, Minnesota; 21 grandchildren and 24 and three-fourth great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe, her six siblings and two great grandsons.

The family would like to thank the staff at Birchwood Cottages for their excellent care over the past ten months and Allina Hospice for their care during Ida’s last days.

A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, Austin Artist Series, Marcusen Park Association or donor’s choice.
