The Austin Post 1216 VFW is racking up a lot of runs as it prepares for the Sub-District Tournament, which will be held in Marcusen Park this weekend.

Post 1216 put an exclamation point to the end of its regular season when it beat Apple Valley 13-0 in Marcusen Park Wednesday.

Austin had five runs on the scoreboard in the first inning before it recorded an out and pitchers Teyghan Hovland, Zach Bollingberg and Jed Nelson combined to allow just one total hit in the five inning game. Tanner Murphy went two-for-four with two RBIs at the plate for Austin and he knocked in a run with a triple to make it a 9-0 lead in the second inning.

“I just like to hit the crap out of the ball and I want to show the kids what I’ve got, cause I’m such a little fella,” Murphy said. “I’m just trying to hit line drives and help the team out. I’ve been coming out of a slump.”

Post 1216 has now scored 34 runs in its last two games after being blanked 1-0 in a District loss to Rochester John Marshall on Saturday. Austin catcher Dawson Mills, who went two-for-two at the plate in the win, said he’s hoping the team can stay consistent at the plate when it begins postseason play at 10 a.m. Saturday.

“I just go up there to the plate and I don’t really think. I just try to see the ball, put in play and make the defense make plays,” Mills said. “Saturday was rough. That team was very beatable and we just didn’t come out do our thing. We didn’t show up. This weekend we just need to show up play our baseball and not worry about mistakes. We need to stay focused on the next opportunity.”
