Austin U16 softball team sweeps Stewartville behind Wempner’s walk-off hit

The Austin U16 softball team picked up a dramatic win to start the night on an 9-8 walk-off victory in six innings over Stewartville and it took the nightcap 11-6 in four innings in Todd Park Wednesday night.
Stewartville scored two runs in the top of the fifth of the opener to tie the game at 8-8 and it added another run in the top of the sixth to go up 8-7. Austin took the win when Briella Wempner drilled a pitch to center field for a double that scored Destiny Gray from first base.
“I went into it and I was thinking about how I had already grounded out twice [in my first two at bats],” Wempner said. “I didn’t want to do that again, so I went up there confident and I wanted to get a base hit.”

AJ Richard picked up the win in relief of the first game for Austin (6-4 overall) as she allowed zero hits in two innings and she also grabbed the pitching win in the nightcap.
“I just go out there and try to have fun with it,” Richard said. “I like to have fun with my friends and pitching is fun. I feel like everyone’s learning valuable skills in softball and in life this summer.”
