The Austin U16 softball team has had its ups and downs this summer and it went through a little bit of both in a doubleheader against Byron in Todd Park Monday.

Austin bounced back from an early 3-0 hole two beat Byron 15-7 in game one, but it blew a 15-3 lead in the final inning as it lost the nightcap 16-15. Both games were three innings due to time limits.

Hannah McMasters had a two-run single in each game for Austin (4-4 RYFSA). She said Austin’s young roster has had to do a lot of learning this summer.

“It’s definitely a lot different getting used to playing with a bunch of different girls. It’s slower and it’s not as fast,” McMasters said. “We had positivity and confidence in the first game and we kept everyone together as a team.”

Austin committed five errors in the second game and it had two miscues in the first game.

Austin shortstop Erica Lundberg said the veteran players are trying to step up as leaders this summer.

“We’re helping them, but they’re still a little slow sometimes,” Lundberg said. “They’ve just got to get used to it. They’re getting better.”
