Garage damaged in Saturday fire; Fire likely started in electrical box

No injuries were reported in a Saturday evening fire that damaged an unattached garage.

According to Mower County Chief Deputy Mark May, an individual driving north on Highway 218 called at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday after observing smoke coming from the property at 53254 275th St. in Austin. Some individuals stopped at the residence and saw smoke coming from the unattached garage. They checked the main residence, but no one was home. There were two vehicles near the garage; they were able to move one, but the other was locked.

A deputy observed an electrical pole with wires leading into the garage. Flames were seen coming from where the wires entered the garage, according to May.

The Austin Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire.

The property owners, Leah Erickson and Nicholas Finke, were notified by the Mower County Law Enforcement Center.

The fire appears to have started in the electrical box. Foul play is not suspected.

An ATV motorcycle and children’s toys were inside the garage.

There is no damage estimate at this time.
