Forte Milers return to Austin for their annual show

The Forte Milers Barbershop Chorus will present “Doo Wop, Barbershop and Family Harmony” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the Historic Paramount Theatre.

The show will feature classic doo wop songs from the 1950s and 1960s, such as “In the Still of the Night,” “Come Go with Me,” “Stand by Me,” “Under the Boardwalk,” and a medley of Beach Boys songs.

The family harmony part of the show will feature the Benson Family Singers of Faribault and the Sopha Sisters from Cresco, Iowa.

The Forte Milers are part of the Barbershop Harmony Society and include singers from across southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. They have performed annually in Austin since 2007.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Student tickets are $5 and children ages 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at austinareaarts.org, at the Austin ArtWorks Center, or by calling the AAC at 507-434-0934.

Taste of Nations to feature food from more than 30 countries

The ninth annual Taste of Nations will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Austin National Guard Armory.

The event is free to the public and is sponsored be Welcome Center, Inc., Austin Human Rights Commission, Riverland Community College, Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, Vision 2020, First Farmers & Merchants, US Bank and Accentra Credit Union.

• Second Floor Art Gallery Opening – Tim Rietz and Cedar River Watershed District, 5-7 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. Gallery opening featuring the photos of Tim Rietz and photos showing scenes from along our Cedar River Watershed District. Show will be up through Jun 16. Free and open to the public. • Open Studio Polymer Clay Class, 2-4:30 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. With Layl McDill. Learn some new techniques to make your own millefiori canes and other fun ways to layer and slice the colored clay, then put the pieces together to create a sculpture or a covered object. Bring you own object, like a small teapot or a frame (anything metal, wood, ceramic or glass works great), or choose from the objects Layl has brought. Cost is $40. • Steppin’ Out for Autism Walk, 1-4 p.m. at the Hormel Historic Home. Annual event to raise funds and awareness for autism programming in Austin. Includes silent auction and raffle.
