The Modern Woodmen of America gave the Hometown Hero Award to three Austin firefighters on Monday evening at George’s Pizza.

Firefighters Josh Kunze, Tim Hansen and Tom Schulte were presented the awards in recognition of their efforts to rescue a six-year-old girl on Feb. 27 after she fell through the ice at Mill Pond.

“To me, they’re all hometown heroes,” said Vicki Legried, retired financial representative and chapter coordinator for Modern Woodmen of America. “If they saved a child’s life, then my goodness. I’m amazed that they love their job and they do it so well.”

For the firefighters, it’s not about accolades.

It’s all about doing their jobs.

“I know the guys would agree that the awards are nice, but we do this because we love it,” Kunze said.

Along with the certificate, each firefighter received $100 to be donated to a charity of their choice.
