Relay For Life events happen all over the states as well as many other countries.

The American Cancer Society supports breakthrough research. Free lodging near treatment, including the Hope Lodge in Rochester; a 24/7/365, live helpline. Rides to treatment. This is far from a complete list, but it makes one thing clear. When it comes to cancer, we are the only organization attacking from every angle.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Mower County is scheduled from 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, July 28, at the Mower County Fairgrounds. Please consider forming a team and joining us. A team can consist of two team members to 15 or more. Participate in as much or as little fundraising activities as your team wants.

Our kickoff event happens from 4:30-8 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at Pizza Ranch in Austin. This coincides with the Betty’s Bud’s RFL Team Community Impact fundraiser at Pizza Ranch during that same time. Even if you are not interested in forming or joining a team, stop out and support Betty’s Bud’s Relay Team.

We are coming to the end of March, which is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer can be prevented. Get screened. Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. for men and women. But colon and rectal cancers can be prevented or caught early, when they might be easier to treat. That’s why getting screened is so important. I loved the billboards that were around a year or so ago that said “Get your Rear in Gear.” I am sure most of you saw them. They were great reminders for us all.

This coming Thursday, March 22, advocates from our sister organization, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, with be visiting our state senators and representatives at the State Capitol seeking their support in raising the tobacco age to 21, to fund statewide cessation services, and help us create a smoke-free generation. Raising the tobacco sales age is expected to prevent 30,000 Minnesota kids from using tobacco products over the next 15 years. That means less cancer and addiction.
