Several cartons of cigars, cigarillos and cigarettes were stolen from Ankeny’s Mini Mart during a theft that occurred sometime Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, police responded to a call at 4:13 a.m. Thursday to the Ankeny’s Mini Mart at 902 12th St. SW. An employee came to work and found a window broken and about $150 worth of Swisher cigars and cigarillos and American Spirit cigarettes missing.

A landscaping brick had been used to break the window. The thief or thieves then reached in and grabbed the tobacco products from a nearby shelf.

The theft is similar to another that occurred late Saturday night or early Sunday morning at the Ankeny’s at 1205 Oakland Place SE. In that theft, a brick was used to smash through the east side window. Surveillance footage posted on social media shows two suspects in hoodies smashing the window and grabbing cigars off a nearby shelf.

While Krueger stated the thefts might possibly be connected, it is unclear at this time if they are.

There are currently no suspects at this time. The store’s owner will be reviewing the surveillance video.
