Austin Bruins clinch a playoff spot

Despite a pair of losses this past weekend in Minot, the Bruins clinched a spot in the Robertson Cup playoffs, returning to postseason action after missing out last season for only the second time in team history.

The Bruins gained a point on Friday, but after a pair of Devon Fields power play goals, let a 2-0 third period lead slip away late and lost to the Minotauros, 3-2 in overtime. On Saturday, the offense was kept at bay and didn’t score until 1:20 left in regulation time. Dante Sheriff gave the Bruins a chance with a goal, but they couldn’t find the equalizer and fell, 2-1.

Fifth place Bismarck was swept at home by the Minnesota Wilderness, allowing the Bruins to clinch despite the losses. The Bruins have seven games remaining and are three points ahead of the Wilderness for second place – and first round home-ice advantage. They also have a game in hand on the Wilderness. The Bruins are now ten points behind first-place Aberdeen, who can clinch the regular season division title as soon as next weekend.
