Mayer, Sayles are Triple A winners at Austin High School

Austin High School has announced that seniors Emily Sayles and Mitchell Mayer have been have been selected as the district’s Triple A Award winners for 2017-2018.
Mayer has also been named the Region 1AA Triple A award recipient for the 2017-18 school year. He was selected based on his academic, athletic and fine arts accomplishments out of all male nominees in Region 1AA which, in addition to Austin, includes Albert Lea, Kasson-Mantorville, Faribault, Farmington, Hastings, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, New Prague, Northfield, Owatonna, Red Wing, Rochester Mayo, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall and Winona.
He will now move forward to compete for the State Class AA Triple A award — which is announced in late March, at the state boys’ basketball tournament.
Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts and Athletics, known as the Triple A Award, is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a B or better grade point average and who participate in league-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.
Mayer is a three-sport athlete at the high school. He participates in cross country, swimming and diving, and track and field. He has qualified for the state swimming meet the past three years and has finished in the top 10 in two of his events at the state meet. Mayer was selected as a captain for all three teams in his senior season.
He has been a member of the Austin High School Band and Jazz Band throughout his high school career and is a section leader. He plans to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He is the son of Mark and Holli Mayer.
Sayles is a two-sport athlete participating in tennis and dance and was chosen tennis captain this season. She was recognized as an academic all-state.
Sayles has also been an active member of the Austin High School Band all four years, and was selected as a section leader in her senior year. She has also been a member of the orchestra in both her junior and senior years.
She is also active in the high school’s art club and has displayed many pieces at the high school art shows each year. Sayles plans on going to the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Sayles is the daughter of Laura and Chad Sayles.
