The Austin girls basketball team had trouble containing Worthington’s go-to scorer as the Packers fell short by a score of 66-53 in Ove Berven Gym Tuesday.

Nyamer Diew finished with 29 points for the Trojans (9-7 overall) and she scored 12 straight points during a 12-5 Worthington spurt to put her team up 55-48. Austin’s Abby Lewis, who had 22 points, had hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 43-43 with eight minutes left.

“We played zone and she’s hitting threes from four feet behind the line and we go man-to-man and she’s going one on three,” Austin head coach Eric Zoske said. “We needed about four more girls on the floor.”

Austin led 10-8 early on after Hope Dudycha, who finished with 12 points, hit a three-pointer, but Worthington answered with a 9-0 spurt and the Trojans led for the rest of the first half.

“I think we lost the game in the first ten minutes,” Zoske said. “We started two for nine from the free throw line and that put us in a hole. We haven’t practiced in awhile and it looked like we needed a basketball practice. We just need to get in, get some shots up and get back to the fundamentals and we’ll be alright.”
