The Austin girls basketball team saw a 16-point lead disappear as it lost to Rochester Mayo 47-46 in Ove Berven Gym Thursday.

Austin had two shots to win the game as Emily Hegna, who had nine points, missed a runner and Abby Lewis, who had six points, missed a desperation shot in the closing seconds. Mayo took a 47-46 lead when Hallie Olson connected on one of two free throws with 13 seconds left.

The Packers (7-6 overall, 6-5 Big Nine) led 27-11 right before the break when the Spartans came up with a steal and a three to garner momentum. Mayo (8-7 overall, 6-5 Big Nine) started the second half with an 8-2 burst to get within 29-22 with 15 minutes left in the game and it used a 12-0 spurt over a five-minute stretch to take a 40-37 lead with five minutes left in the game.

“When you lose by one point you’ve got to look over the course of the game,” Austin head coach Eric Zoske said. “We were running stall in the last 27 seconds of the first half and our guards panicked a little bit and they hit a three-pointer right before halftime. You look at that one possession where we could’ve had the last shot and that’s just one thing. It’s the small things and they all ad up to a one point win or a one point loss.”

The Packers were able to tie the game a few times in the last five minutes, but they weren’t able to grab the lead.

“I don’t know what exactly happened offensively in the second half. It was working pretty well in the first half,” Zoske said.
