The No. 5 ranked Hayfield girls basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season without one of its top scorers when it beat No. 2 Goodhue (11-2 overall, 6-2 HVL) 51-45 in Hayfield Tuesday.
The Vikings (11-2 overall, 5-1 HVL) were playing without Maggie Streightiff, who will be out for approximately a week with an injury, and they trailed by nine points early, but they found a way to win.
Olivia Matti hit a jump shot to tie the game at 34 with and Carrie Rutledge, who scored 21 points, came up with a steal and score to put Hayfield up for good at 36-34 with 10:19 left in the game.
The Vikings won the turnover battle and they held Goodhue’s Sydney Lodermeier to nine points.
“Elecia Brown did an amazing job on Sydney Lodermeier,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “Elecia made it very tough for her to drive and holding their star to nine points was very good for us.”
