The Hayfield girls basketball team was shorthanded against a tough team, but it didn’t back down as it beat Stewartville (13-3 overall, 7-1 HVL) 70-68 in overtime on the road Tuesday.
The Vikings (13-3 overall, 7-1 HVL) were playing without two of their leading scorers in Maggie Streightiff and Carrie Rutledge, who are both dealing with minor issues, but they prevailed against the Tigers, who are ranked No. 9 in Class AA.
Abby Stasko won the game for Hayfield when she banked in a 10-foot jump shot as time expired.
“It was an awesome win tonight. Our girls played their hearts out,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said.
Kate Kruger had 15 points, eight rebounds and nine assists for Hayfield and Elecia Brown continued her strong play as she racked up 20 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.
“Elecia looks really good right now,” Krekling said “She’s always been our best defensive player, but now she’s really looking to score offensively and she’s really hard to cover. She’s just a hard matchup right now.”
Hayfield scoring: Elecia Brown, 20; Kate Kruger, 15; Olivia Matti, 12; Emma Holst, 11; Brooke Bungum, 6; Abby Stasko, 4; Caitlynn Severson, 2; free throws: 64 percent (7-for-11)
