Austin schools closed Monday; winter storm on its way

- A wintry mix of precipitation will spread across the area tonight, increasing in intensity and areal coverage Monday. Mainly rain is expected in the south and east with mostly snow from southeast Minnesota into north central Wisconsin. In between, small adjustments in the storm track could significantly impact precipitation types and amounts. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible Monday. Hazardous to dangerous travel expected over portions of the area. Stay up-to-date with the latest forecast and be prepared for difficult travel on Monday, including the morning and evening commutes.
Schools throughout Mower County are closed Monday because of dangerous winter weather forecast. A winter storm warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Monday until midnight.
The Austin, Grand Meadow, LeRoy-Ostrander and Lyle school districts announced Sunday night a head of the storm that classes were cancelled Monday.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for heavy snow and mixed precipitation, which will create dangerous travel conditions.
Up to 12 inches of snow, glaze ice, and blowing and drifting are expected, beginning at 3 a.m. Monday.
“Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times,” the winter warning says. “A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected.
