City’s tax hearing is on Tuesday

The Austin City Council will host a Truth in Taxation hearing on Tuesday to discuss the 2018 budget and tax levy. The hearing will provide details of city expenses and taxes in 2018.

The proposed 2018 budget is $33,974,138, which is up from $31,252,900 in 2017. Increases are budgeted for the general fund, capital improvements and sewer user fund account.

Earlier this year, the council OK’d a tax levy increase of 11.23 percent over the tax levy for 2017, which saw a 9 percent increase over the 2016 tax levy.

The largest portion of city expenditures in Austin’s tax-supported funds is city wages and benefits.

The Truth in Taxation hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Council Chambers in the basement of City Hall. The hearing is open to the public.
