Wildcats edge out Awesome Blossoms in Section 1A title game

ROCHESTER — If the No. 3 Awesome Blossoms were underdogs against top-seeded Goodhue in the Section 1A title football game at RCTC Saturday, somebody forgot to tell them.
Blooming Prairie pushed the Wildcats well into the fourth quarter, but they finished their season a play or two short as they lost 19-14.
Goodhue (11-0 overall) took the lead for good at 19-14 when Mason Huemann, who ran for 229 yards, dove in for a one-yard TD with 11:13 left in the game. BP looked to have an answer when Seth Peterson hit Tim Wolf for a 45-yard strike down the sideline to Goodhue’s 35-yard line on its final possession, but BP’s drive stalled out on downs and Goodhue ran the clock out on its next possession.
“We were playing a great team and we’ve got to make all the plays. There’s three, four, five or six plays we can go back and look at,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “Everybody looks at missed tackles or wide receivers getting open, but there’s missed blocks, and it’s everything. It takes eleven guys to do their jobs on every drive and you need momentum plays. They just made a few more than us. It was a great high school football game.”
The Wildcats had beaten BP 35-13 in the regular season and early on it looked like they were headed for another lop-sided win as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead after Ryan Schoenfelder hauled in a 24-yard pass on third and 17 to set up a six-yard TD run by Huemann. BP pulled to within 10-7 on a 35-yard TD pass from Peterson to Gabe Hagen with 5:08 left in the first half and BP went up 14-13 in the third quarter after Mitchell Oswald blocked a Goodhue field goal and Peterson hit Wolf for a 39-yard TD.
Peterson threw for 277 yards for the Awesome Blossoms (8-3 overall), who had just 43 yards on the ground.
“We looked at what they were doing and we figured we could throw the ball on them. We weren’t having a lot of success running the ball,” Gimbel said. “I’m super proud of these kids. The way they rose the challenge at the end of the season was great. I’m so proud of our kids and how they handled adversity at the end of the season.”
Goodhue’s Schoenfelder is a matchup nightmare at 6-5 and 215 pounds, but BP sophomore Karson Vigeland was able to limit his impact, holding him to four catches for 124 yards.
“He was a tough matchup,” Gimbel said. “We put Karson on the toughest guy all season long and he’s been up to the challenge. He was tonight too, it’s hard to find anyone to cover [Schoenfelder]. He’s 6-5 and he can out-physical you.”
