The Austin ALDI is one of the three stores in the region undergoing renovations as part of the grocery company’s nationwide plan to remodel and expand more than 1,300 locations nationwide by 2020. ALDI’s goal is to have upgrades in Mason City, Iowa, Rochester and Austin finished by 2019, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

In February, ALDI announced a $1.6 billion investment in its stores across the country, with $5.8 million dedicated to enhancing five stores in southeast Minnesota, north central Iowa and the surrounding area.

The new ALDI store design intends to offer a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections. Remodeled stores will feature open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting, the release said.

“Whether you’re a current ALDI customer or you haven’t stopped by your local ALDI lately, we invite you to come experience the new ALDI look and see how we’ve expanded our fresh offerings while staying true to our everyday low prices,” said Matt Lilla, Faribault division vice president for ALDI. “Customers will recognize our easy-to-shop environment featuring a new modern design and more room for their favorite products.”

In the last few years, ALDI has added a number of new product lines including a growing organic selection and a full line of baby products, Little Journey, which offers customers diapers, wipes, training pants, formula, organic food and snacks.

As part of its accelerated growth and expansion across the U.S., ALDI plans to add 25,000 new jobs in stores, warehouses and offices. ALDI was recently named to Forbes’ list of America’s Best Large Employers and offers employees wages and benefits that are higher than the national average for the retail industry, the release said. ALDI staff working at least 25 hours per week receive full health insurance benefits and dental coverage, and all ALDI employees are invited to participate in the 401(k) program.

ALDI currently operates more than 1,600 U.S. stores in 35 states.
