Winter weather arriving today

Published 8:48 am Friday, October 27, 2017

The record snowfall for this date in Austin, set in 1939,  is 3 inches.

It’s unlikely the winder weather bearing down on Minnesota will break that record, but expect some challenges.

The National Weather Service forecast says to expect snow before 11 a.m. today, followed by rain mixed with snow.  The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

A northwest wind of about 20 mph will give way to gusts as high as 37 mph. So, although the day’s high is expected to be 36, that’s not what you will feel.

New snow accumulation should be less than an inch.

Northern Minnesota will see worse. The National Weather Service posted a winter storm warning for northern Minnesota where 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected to accumulate by Friday. Up to 8 inches of snow is in the forecast for Koochiching County. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph will cause dangerous blowing and drifting snow.
