Walter H. Meidl, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Our House Memory Care.

Walter was born Nov. 4, 1924, in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Hugo E. Meidl and Mary (Saffert) Meidl. He grew up in New Ulm and attended Holy Trinity Catholic School. After graduation, he attended Dr. Salisbury Veternary School of Poultry Health.

On June 22, 1944, during World War II, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacfiic.

On June 11, 1946, Walter was united in marriage to Rita Jane Schultz at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. To this union seven children were born.

In 1947 Walter started his own business, Meidl Home Improvement, and ran it for 44 years.

Walter was involved in many organizations in his community: The Knights of Columbus, Bohmian Poultry Club, Southern Minnesota Pigeon Association, Rochester Homing Pigeon Association and he was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; six children, Marjorie (Steve) Grosman, Linda (Keith) Schroeder, Michael Meidl, Mark Meidl, Mary Gettsche, and Carol Knight; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Staff Sgt. Walter J. Meidl; great-granddaughter, Alexis Jo Haugland; four sisters; and two brothers.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery Austin, Minnesota.
