Opportunities to tag monarchs still open

If you are 10, 11 or 12 years old, you can still sign up for the monarch tagging class at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center.
There is a class from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday. Learn to catch, tag, record and release monarchs before they start their 2,000-mile migration. Space is limited to 10 children per class.
There will be two more sessions in September as well. Contact the nature center to register at 507-437-7519.
Volleyball
Adult Fall Volleyball League registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8. Leagues play at Ellis Middle School with women’s league on Wednesday evenings and co-ed on Friday evenings.
Entry fee is $169 plus an $8 player fee with a minimum of six players paid for when you register. You may find our information on our city website or on our Facebook page.
Deer hunt
Our deer hunt application is now available. It is currently posted on our Facebook page and will be on our website at www.ci.austin.mn.us. The DNR book states that our deadline is Aug. 18 but we have extended that deadline to Sept. 14.
Austin police
Stop down to Community Bandshell Park from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday for the Austin Police Department’s K-9 Fundraiser. They will have K-9 demos at 4 and 5 p.m. and will also have available hot dogs, chips and a beverage. Free will offerings will be accepted. Thank you to their sponsors: Willow Pet Hospital, Frito Lay, Hormel Foods, Double K Specialty, Hy-Vee and All Fur Dogs.
The Austin Police Department will be holding another Citizen Academy from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10 and 17.
Class applications are available at the Law Enforcement Center or online at the city website: www.ci.austin.mn.us. You must be an Austin resident or business owner age 21 or older to apply.
Learn to skate
The next Learn to Skate registration deadline is Sept. 11. It is open to all ages and will teach the participants the basics of skating. The program will run six weeks on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. beginning Sept.13 through Oct. 18 with a cost of $35. Skates can be rented for $1 depending on size availability. We will provide a helmet.
We will be rescheduling the Learn to Play Hockey class until after the Austin Youth Hockey sign up. Watch for more information to follow.
Bruins
The Austin Bruins will be hosting two pre-season games this year on Friday, Sept. 8, against the Brookings Blizzard and Friday, Sept. 15, against the Minnesota Magicians at 7:05 both nights. Riverland Arena
Adult Open Hockey: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday’s through August. September times will change.
Public skate: 4 to 6 p.m. Monday. Skate Monday through Friday from 11:30 — 1:30 p.m. for the month of August. Cost is $2 with $1 skate rental if needed.
Stick time: 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
