Austin’s Hovland plays on championship AAU team

Teyghan Hovland of Austin capped off a strong summer with his AAU team, the Southeast Minnesota Thunder, as he was part of an eighth grade national championship.
Hovland, who will be a freshman at Austin High School in the fall, and the Thunder went 7-0 as they won the MAYB 2017 boys nationals at the Farah Sports Complexes in Wichita, Kansas recently.
The tournament had 32 teams from around the United States and the Thunder went 7-0 to capture the title. The Thunder beat the St. Louis Sonics 67-62 in the national championship game.
The Thunder are coached by Jason Herber practice in Kasson and they include players from Kasson, Rochester, Byron, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Owatonna and Austin. The Thunder finished with a record of 28-4 overall this season.
Hovland averaged 18.5 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, five steals and two blocked shots in the national tournament.
