Mower County No. 1 placed sixth as a team in the 2017 Senior General Livestock Judging Contest last week at the Minnesota State Fair. Rice County with 2,228 points took first. Mower had 2,117 points.
Top overall performers for Mower County were Martha Moenning and Emily Bollum taking third and fourth, respectively.
Bollum also placed second in sheep judging. Moenning took third in beef.
Hundreds of Minnesota 4-Hers spend their summer evenings evaluating cattle, hogs and sheep. In addition to conducting the evaluations, 4-Hers learn the art of oral reasons as a means of justifying their placing, according to an Extension news release.
Experience gained in judging livestock helps a participant select future projects and replacements for their own herd ventures, it added.
