The top-seeded Austin Post 1216 VFW baseball team simply ran out of offense as it saw its season come to an end in a 1-0 loss to Rochester Century in a Sub-District title game in Marcusen Park Sunday.

Austin, which was playing as the road team, had runners on first and second in the first and second innings, but it mustered just one hit the rest of the way and it never advanced a runner past second base.

Century took the lead for good when it scored off a Post 1216 error in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“We fell a little short, but this happens in the playoffs,” Austin head coach Joe Ciola said. “We ran into a tough pitcher today who changed his speed and his location.”

Riley Wempner allowed zero earned runs in six innings for Austin as he held Century to four hits.

Ciola credited his team for putting together a solid summer, even though it ended sooner than they would’ve liked.

“This is a great group of players and we had a lot of fun. I felt very blessed to be able to spend the summer with them,” Ciola said. “They had a great season. We won the district, taking second in the Blaine tournament was a big accomplishment and also it was a big deal to beat a tough New Ulm team.”
