Boyd Tilford Sandum, 85

Boyd Tilford Sandum, 85, of Blaine, Minnesota, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

He was born Oct. 11, 1931, on the family farm near Rake, Iowa, to Joseph and Bessie (Hauskins) Sandum. Following his graduation from Rake High School, he attended the Austin Area Vocational Technical Institute, training in auto body repair. Boyd entered service in the U.S. Army in 1952, serving in Germany during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1954. On June 16, 1957, Boyd married Janet C. Lange in Sargeant, Minnesota. The couple raised three children. During their years in Austin, Boyd and Janet were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. They moved to Blaine, Minnesota in 2009. Janet passed away July 2, 2016. Boyd operated S&H Auto Body and worked nights at Hormel Foods both in the Cure 81 Ham Department and driving a forklift. Among Boyd’s favorite pastimes were restoring antique cars, spending winters in Arizona, fishing and camping, bowling, and especially spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children Diane (Jim) Felton of Fridley, Minnesota, Deb Bernier of Blaine, Minnesota, and Dave Sandum of Prescott, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Lauren, Taylor, Briana, and Natalie; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Landon, and Sura; siblings, Glennis Pearson of Fort Pierre, South Dakota, Peggy (Al) Smidt of Buffalo Center, Iowa; and brother-in-law Verland (Darlene) Lange of Ostrander, Minnesota. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet Sandum; his brother, Carroll Sandum and his wife Gladys; his sister LaVonne Quame and her husband Robert; and brother-in-law, Leland Pearson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor James Groleau officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, at Worlein Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date. Memorials can be directed to the American Lung Association or the recipient of the donor’s choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Edgewood Senior Living in Blaine, Minnesota. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements.
