Evie Mohrfeld: To the Capitol and beyond

Published 8:26 am Tuesday, May 2, 2017

Travel has begun for us with visits to our State Capitol. Its renovation project is still on-going, but we were able to join in the early tours in the past two weeks. For some, it was their first visit and others are definitely noticing the projects added with this $310 million dollar project.

While some new features include plenty of fresh paint with vibrant colors, the cleaning of works of art reveals the original intent of the artists.

Some of the world of our nation’s best artists were commissioned and hung throughout the building. More than 20 types of stone are used in the halls and chambers. Native Minnesota  limestone from Kasota and Mankato were used on the walls. The vaulted ceilings are decorated with hand-painted designs of grains and fruits which are grown in Minnesota. Many murals and paintings cover entire wall spaces.

The basement has taken on a whole new look, including wider hallways and newly-tiled floors. The painted curved ceilings with gold writings make it a joy to have lunch in the dining area. Throughout the building some 600 pieces of historic furniture can be traced to original designs by the Capitol’s architect. Docents were very informative. Using the large elevators made it easier to admire building.

Each day a costumed St. Paul “gangster” was our guide on the motor coach, telling of the story of their involvement with St Paul and the part they played with the police chief in the 1930s. Stories were also shared about how the St. Paul schools were established and how they served notable families like the Hamm’s family and others. It was an entertaining two-hour drive and really peaked our interest.

Tours of the State’s Capitol will continue this summer along with a big celebration in August.

On Thursday and Friday, May 11-12, we will go to “South Pacific” at the Fireside Theater in Wisconsin. This promises to be a very special trip and perhaps a great gift as Mother’s Day is nearing. We have a few openings if we hear soon from those interested. This theater is ranked one of the top professional theaters featuring Broadway entertainment, not to forget to mention the fabulous buffet they are noted for.

The deposit for our Nashville trip in November is due. This will be an “All About Christmas” tour. Dates are November 26-Dec. 1.

Gift certificates are available, in any amount.
