Shirley M. Burney, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minnesota.

Shirley was born Oct. 29, 1935, in Austin, to William and Leona (Johnson) Skov. She grew up on the family farm in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. Shirley was united in marriage in May 1958 to Charles Burney at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She was employed for many years at Hormel Foods in Austin where she worked as a secretary in the corporate office. She was a longtime faithful member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Shirley loved to garden, enjoyed arts and crafts, and working on home improvements at her home.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Julie (Tim) Zaviska of Rosemount, Minnesota; siblings, Marlys Golberg and Roger (Cindy) Skov, both of Austin; and nephews, Brad Golberg and Todd Golberg. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles; son Tony; brothers Stuart and Eugene.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Shirley’s family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and will continue on Friday morning for one hour prior to services at church. Interment will be in the Rose Creek Enterprise Cemetery in rural Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family.
