Good Morning, Austin!: Herald switching to morning publication

Published 6:01 am Sunday, April 2, 2017

You will soon be able to enjoy your Austin Daily Herald earlier in the day.

Beginning May 1, the Austin Daily Herald will switch to a morning publication after years of being an evening paper. The Herald will also move it’s weekend edition from Sunday to Saturday.

The Herald will also no longer print holiday editions.

The way you get it will change, too. Delivery to most locations will almost entirely be made through the U.S. Postal Service. The newspaper will be placed in mailboxes with regular mail delivery. It will be available at businesses and on racks by 8 a.m.

In a few specific instances, a small pool of carriers will be used to deliver the early edition, or to residents who may not normally receive mail directly.

Publisher Jana Gray said the rising gas prices and and higher newsprint costs have prompted a study of alternative ways to deliver the paper. The U.S. Postal Service is efficient and dependable; subscribers will receive their daily newspaper right along with their mail.

Gray said if there is sadness, it is in having to say goodbye to a corps of faithful carriers. While some will be retained for a limited number of deliveries, many will no longer be needed.

“I would like to thank all of the carriers who have delivered the Austin Daily Herald all these years, for their service to us and our subscribers,” she said.

The change will not affect the subscription price, Gray said. News, advertising and obituary deadlines will change however.

Those items will need to be to the Herald staff by 3 p.m. for the next morning’s publication. The change will not affect social news, that is placed in the newspaper’s “Spotlight” section. Anniversary, wedding and births should be in the office no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesdays for the Sunday publication.
