A new memory care unit is primed to come to Austin.

The City Council voted 6-0 Monday night to approve the sale of a 3.9-acre site in northwest Austin to Cottage Properties for $253,500.

The plan is to build a 24-unit facility at the property at just east of St. John’s Lutheran Church at 12th Street and 13th Avenue Northwest, a property that was formerly athletic fields and is currently only serving as snow storage during high volume seasons.

Cottage Properties, which operates memory care units in Owatonna with one advancing in Mankato, has potential plans for future phases on the site.

In a memo to council, City Administrator Craig Clark noted the city’s 2013 housing study indicated the city would have a need for senior housing, and Cottage properties aims to obtain financing by Aug. 1 and close on the deal by Sept. 1.

Officials with Cottage Properties could not be reached for comment and were not present at Monday’s council meeting.
