ROCHESTER – The No. 2 Hayfield girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a shooting slump as they saw their season end in a 65-49 loss to No. 3 Rochester Lourdes in a Section 1AA semifinal in Mayo Civic Center Saturday.

The Vikings went just 6-for-32 on three-pointers against the Eagles after they had shot 50 percent on three-pointers in a win at Mayo Civic Center earlier in the regular season. The outside shot has been a fixture for the Vikings (23-6 overall) all season, but it wasn’t there Saturday.

“We shoot a lot of threes and usually we don’t shoot 18 percent,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We thought we had a good feel for this gym, but it didn’t show tonight. They did a good job defensively, but we just didn’t make any shots. That’s just the way it is.”

The game started with Rochester Lourdes getting a breakaway lay-up of the opening tip and they proceeded to get multiple transition hoops. Hayfield pulled to within 24-22 when Carrie Rutledge converted a three-point play late in the first half, but the Eagles (20-9 overall) closed out the half on a 6-0 and they used an 11-5 run early in the second half to go up 46-32.

“Even on that tip right away they got a breakaway and we had too many offensive rebounds that we tipped out,” Krekling said.

The Vikings will bring back the bulk of their squad next season as they will make the move to Class A. Krekling said Hayfield will have to focus on defensive improvements in the offseason.

“We can’t shoot well every night. They have to bring it on the defensive end, create turnovers and create easy points,” he said. “Defensively we’re still not there and we’ll have to work on that over the summer and hopefully into next season.”
