MINNEAPOLIS – Gymnastics can sometimes be a cruel and grueling sport, but Austin senior Maddie Mullenbach was unfazed by her physical pain as she came through with another big performance at the Minnesota Class A individual state meet in the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion Saturday.

Mullenbach suffered a brutal fall on the vault in Friday’s team meet, but she bounced back on Saturday as she took second in the all-around, first in floor and second in vault.
“I’m not one who normally struggles mentally, and it wasn’t necessary the accident I was scared of. My body was really sore and I’ve had a lot of injuries,” Mullenbac said. “But I wasn’t willing to give it up yet.”

Mullenbach finished with an all-around score 38.3125 and Mahotomedi senior Kadry Lenarz won the all-around with a 38.6250.
Mullenbach’s best event of the day was the floor – where she broke through with a score of 9.8.
“I went a little overboard with it, but that’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my gymnastics career on the floor,” Mullenbach said. “It was a weekend with a lot of struggles, but I’m content. I love my teammates and I love competing with them. Seeing them do so well makes my high school career ending very bittersweet.”

Austin junior Jen Boyle was on the podium for the floor where she finished in fifth place. She took 12th in the all-around competition.
“I definitely could’ve had a much better day, but at least I still have next year,” Boyle said. “I’m proud of Maddie for not letting that [fall] get to her. She competed like she always does.”
Austin senior Paige Raymond finished her gymnastics career by taking 22nd in her first ever all-around competition at the state meet.
“It was a fun experience. To end with something so big was fun,” Raymond said. “This team has meant so much to me and there’s a lot of good memories.”
