A man charged with sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 last year was convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct Thursday in Mower County District Court.

Jose Luis Cosme Valdez, 37, of Austin was sentenced to a stayed three-year prison term, meaning he’ll serve 25 years of probation with conditional release after 10 years. He also must register as a predatory offender and follow several conditions.

Austin police officers received the report on June 3 and said a victim was assaulted by Valdez about one year ago. Another victim was receiving explicit text messages from him, according to court records.

Court records say he touched one of the victims during the night at an Austin residence. After the assault, she told the other victim, who saw Valdez leaving the first victim’s room.
