The No. 10 ranked Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team had a chance to pull off an upset, but it lost 54-49 in overtime to defending Class A state champ and No. 3 ranked Goodhue (12-2 overall) on the road Saturday.
The Athletics (8-2 overall) led 46-42 late in regulation, but they couldn’t hold on as the Wildcats forced the extra session. In OT, LP had the ball down 52-49 when Brooke Walter, who scored 14 points, had a game-tying three-pointer go in and out with 40 seconds left.
LP held Goodhue’s top scoreer Sydney Lodermier to zero points in the first half, but she had 14 in the second half. Both of LP’s losses have come down to the wire against ranked teams.
“I was very proud of our kids and how they competed. We put ourselves in position to win again against the defending state champions on their floor,” LP head coach Justin Morris said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well but our kids were gritty and tough all night. We just have to find a way to make one more play down the stretch. That’s the difference between getting back to a state tournament and bowing out in Rochester.”
LP scoring: Brooke Walter, 14; Bethany Strouf, 14; Abby Bollingberg, 8; Kristi Fett, 6; Lucy Nelson, 4; Kendal Truckenmiller, 3; free throws: 92 percent (11-for-12); three-pointers: 24 perecnt (5-for-21)
