Austin police chief warns of telephone scam targeting the elderly

Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger is cautioning citizens of a telephone scam.
Similar to others reported in the past, citizens — often the elderly — are targeted by someone calling and telling them that a grandchild is in jail or in trouble of some kind, and needs money. Krueger said sometimes, that person even poses as the grandchild’s attorney.
One woman recently sent $250 — twice — to such a scam artist.
Those receiving such calls should report them to Austin police at 507-437-9400.
